The Oyo State government is closely monitoring two suspected cases of cholera from Lagos state, currently admitted in a private hospital in Ibadan. This follows a recent cholera outbreak in Lagos that claimed five lives and hospitalized 60 individuals.
Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the establishment of Public Health Rapid Response Team and Public Health Emergency Management Committee by Governor Seyi Makinde to ensure the health and safety of the citizens. The state’s surveillance teams are actively monitoring the suspected cases as they await test results.
Preparedness measures include increased surveillance on cases of gastroenteritis, establishment of a Cholera Technical Working Group, provision of medical supplies, and public awareness campaigns on safe drinking water and hygiene practices. Collaboration with organizations like WHO and UNICEF is also in place to enhance response efforts.
Residents are urged to report any suspected cases promptly to healthcare facilities, as the government is committed to preventing infectious disease outbreaks in the communities.
