Morocco ranks 4th globally in Schengen visa applications in 2023, with over 591,000 applications. Shockingly, Moroccans have wasted MAD 118 million in rejected visas, totaling 136,367 rejected demands. This high rejection rate is due to various reasons, including the ongoing “silent crisis” between Morocco and France leading to fewer visas granted to Moroccans.
Despite stable relations with Spain, Morocco tops the list for Spanish visa requests, with a rejection rate of 27%. The high rejection rates from countries other than France could be due to strict criteria or concerns over immigration.
These visa rejections not only impact individual travelers but also affect diplomatic relations. The financial burden of rejected visas for Moroccans is significant, prompting a need to consider alternative travel destinations outside of Europe.
It is vital for Morocco to encourage initiatives to address this issue, as visa rejections have become a profitable industry for popular destination countries. The cost of rejected visas, although seemingly insignificant on an individual level, adds up significantly with the high volume of applications.
