The recent US announcement of sanctions against Russia, targeting China’s provision of semiconductors and threatening secondary sanctions on foreign financial institutions dealing with Russia’s war economy, triggered a strong response from the Kremlin. Dmitry Medvedev, Security Council Deputy Chairman, condemned the sanctions as an act of war without rules. He called for a relentless retaliation to maximize harm on Western countries.
Medvedev emphasized the need to identify vulnerabilities in the West’s economy, institutions, and rulers to cause substantial damage. He also highlighted President Putin’s threat to provide weapons to Moscow’s allies capable of striking countries supporting Ukraine. Medvedev suggested organizing social unrest, anarchy, and crime in major cities to destabilize the West.
He advocated for a ruthless approach to paralyze critical infrastructure, instill fear, and create a chaotic nightmare for Western nations. Quoting Leviticus 24:20, Medvedev justified the retaliation, stating that everyone should contribute to inflicting pain on the West for the harm suffered by Russia.
