Congress MP Karti Chidambaram recently highlighted crucial issues in a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He emphasized the need to restore senior citizens’ concessions and address safety concerns related to ticketless travelling in Indian Railways.
Chidambaram pointed out the suspension of senior citizens’ concession since the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, stressing that it has not been reinstated as of 2024. He also highlighted the recommendation by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways in August 2022 to review and reinstate this concession for vulnerable senior citizens.
The Congress leader raised concerns about the revenue earned by Indian Railways from the withdrawal of senior citizen concessions and urged for their restoration, considering the railway’s massive scale and importance in daily commutes for millions of Indians.
Furthermore, Chidambaram called for immediate action to address safety issues related to ticketless passengers, citing incidents of overcrowding and stranded passengers due to unregulated travel practices.
