The Agnipath programme, launched two years ago, has created a group of young candidates called Agniveers in India. However, dissatisfaction has grown due to the scheme’s shortened period, especially in regions known for army recruitment.
Certain communities and regions in India see the Agniveer programme as a hindrance to their employment prospects, leading to political demands for its review and potential removal. Janata Dal United, a key ally in the ruling coalition, has called for a detailed assessment of the scheme.
Concerns have been raised about a manpower shortage in the Indian armed forces due to the Agniveer programme. Retired Major General Ashok Mehta estimates a shortfall of 180,000 soldiers, highlighting the challenges of the scheme.
