French left-wing parties have come together to form a new alliance in preparation for potential snap elections called by President Emmanuel Macron. The alliance, dubbed the “new popular front,” includes the Socialists, Communists, Greens, and the radical left party La France Insoumise, among others.
The leaders of these parties are discussing plans for forming a government if they emerge victorious. Potential candidates for prime minister include La France Insoumise’s Jean-Luc Mélenchon and François Ruffin.
Macron’s decision to call early elections, following his failure to secure a parliamentary majority, poses a challenge to the far-right Rassemblement National. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal emphasized the importance of a “societal choice” between Macron’s centrist camp and the far-right.
