Breaking News: French Citizen Released after Two Years in Iranian Detention
President Emmanuel Macron announced the release of Louis Arnaud, a French citizen detained in Iran on national security charges almost two years ago. Arnaud, a banking consultant, was accused of involvement in anti-government activities and sentenced to five years in jail in 2023.
Macron expressed gratitude to Oman for assisting in securing Arnaud’s freedom and called for the release of three other French prisoners in Iran. The deteriorating bilateral relations between Paris and Tehran have raised concerns about arbitrary detentions and Iran’s regional activities.
Arnaud’s family revealed that he was detained while celebrating a backpacker’s birthday, during a period of widespread protests in Iran. Held at the infamous Evin prison, Arnaud’s release follows accusations of human rights violations at the facility by rights groups.
