As September approaches and the schools reopen, thoughts turn to the possibility of several by-elections sparked by TDs being elected to the European Parliament. With the potential appointment of the next European Commissioner, the number of by-elections could reach five. Some believe September would be an ideal time for these elections, as the Government parties are in a strong position following recent local and European votes.

Despite governments historically losing more by-elections than they win, there is optimism that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could secure victories in at least two of the five seats. If this were to happen, the Dáil arithmetic would remain unchanged, delaying a general election until March.

However, not everyone is on board with this idea, with some coalition members expressing skepticism. Regardless, cooperation between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will be crucial moving forward. The government cannot afford to collapse, and consensus will be vital in determining the next steps.
