The Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale, emphasized in New York that Algeria must face the reality of the failure of its separatist project in the Sahara. Hilale urged Algeria to choose a peaceful approach for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara instead of pursuing a costly agenda that neglects the well-being of its people.
Hilale also called on Algeria to acknowledge the facts that the Sahara has always been and will always remain Moroccan, and that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative is the best solution for the conflict. He criticized certain States for misinterpreting the principles of self-determination in an attempt to undermine the territorial integrity of countries.
Furthermore, Hilale highlighted Morocco’s historical ties to the Sahara and the legal recognition of its sovereignty over the region. He expressed disappointment in the deviation of the UN Committee of 24 from its original mandate and its lack of focus on all aspects of self-determination.
In conclusion, Hilale underscored Morocco’s efforts to reclaim its territories and criticized Algeria for supporting the separatist group “polisario” in violation of international law.
