Fumihiko Maki, the legendary Japanese architect and recipient of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, passed away at the age of 95 in his home in Tokyo. Known for his modernist style, Maki’s most notable works include the 4 World Trade Center in New York, which stands as a symbol of resilience after the tragic events of 9/11.
Throughout his illustrious career, Maki received numerous accolades both in Japan and internationally, including the esteemed Pritzker Prize in 1993. His architectural prowess was further recognized by the Japanese government when he was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2013.
Having studied at the University of Tokyo and Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Maki’s architectural legacy includes iconic structures such as the Spiral cultural complex in Tokyo, the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba Prefecture, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.
His contribution to the field of architecture will forever be remembered and celebrated for its innovation and impact on the built environment.
