Mayor Eric Adams condemned the vandalism, emphasizing that these actions are not peaceful protests but overt antisemitism. The targeted individuals, including museum director Anne Pasternak, were subjected to personal attacks through vandalism.
Despite the incident, the museum declined to provide more details, stating that a report had been filed with the police. Similar acts of vandalism were also reported at the German consulate and the Palestinian Observer Mission to the UN.
The community responded with outrage, with City Comptroller Brad Lander denouncing the vandalism as crossing the line into antisemitism. The museum, known for delving into complex social issues through art, found itself at the center of controversy.
