Organised Labour has rejected President Bola Tinubu’s claims of a consensus on new national minimum wages, as stated in his Democracy Day broadcast. Tinubu announced that an agreement had been reached, and an executive bill would be sent to the National Assembly to formalize the new minimum wage. However, the acting President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, clarified that no agreement was reached by the Tripartite Committee before negotiations ended on June 7, 2024.
Adeyanju emphasized that the proposed figures of N250,000 from Organised Labour and N62,000 from the government were not finalized or submitted for approval. The NLC remains steadfast in their demand for N250,000 and rejects any claims of an agreement without proper negotiation.
This development highlights the ongoing discussions and discrepancies surrounding the national minimum wage, underscoring the importance of transparency and accurate information in the decision-making process.
