As a new government takes shape in India, speeding up defence tendering procedures is set to be a key priority for the military. Reviewing army recruitment policies and modernizing defence platforms are also at the forefront of the newly formed coalition government’s agenda.
Rajnath Singh, a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has resumed his role as the Defence Minister for a second consecutive term. Under his leadership, the government aims to safeguard India’s borders, maintain sovereignty, and strengthen the ‘Make in India’ initiative to boost defence manufacturing and exports.
India has seen a significant increase in defence exports in recent years, reaching $2.6 billion in the last financial year. Despite this growth, India remains the world’s largest arms importer. Singh is expected to focus on faster modernization of military platforms, streamlining the tendering process, and promoting self-reliance in the defence sector.
The government is also looking into the Agnipath recruitment scheme and potential reforms within the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO). With continuity in key ministerial positions, India’s defence sector is poised for further growth and reform under the new government.
