The Philippines has recently inked a logistics support agreement with New Zealand and is on the brink of finalizing a military access deal with Japan. These agreements will bolster joint military exercises and logistical support, enhancing Manila’s strategic capabilities to counter Beijing’s assertiveness in the South China Sea.
Analysts assert that these moves align with the broader strategic interests of Wellington and Tokyo in ensuring regional stability and safeguarding their security. However, there are concerns that these agreements could provoke a reaction from Beijing, escalating military aggression and diplomatic tensions in the region.
Under the Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement, New Zealand and the Philippines can provide each other with logistical aid during joint exercises, training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response operations.
Tokyo ties
Manila is also close to sealing a deal with Tokyo that would enable forces from both sides to train in each other’s territories.
Negotiations for the Reciprocal Access Agreement commenced in late November, after Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agreed to initiate talks to boost ties.
Manila in 2020 procured mobile long-range air surveillance radar systems from Japan to enhance its detection capabilities in the South China Sea, showcasing a growing partnership between the two nations.
