Morocco has made significant progress in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) 2024, moving up 14 spots to secure the 78th position globally with a total score of 2.054. This ranking places Morocco 6th in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The top three countries on the index are Iceland, Ireland, and Austria, with rankings based on factors such as crime rates, incarceration rates, security personnel, and defense spending. On the other end, Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Ukraine were at the bottom of the list, classified as “red zones.”

Within the Arab world, Kuwait ranked 25th globally, while Israel fell into the “red zone” at 155th place. The MENA region was highlighted as the least peaceful region, with ongoing tensions and high military spending.

The report from the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) emphasized the economic impact of violence globally, indicating the need for sustainable peacebuilding efforts. The unrest in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza, continues to pose significant risks of further conflict.
