The Malawi government announced the state funeral of Vice President Saulos Chilima, who tragically died in a plane crash along with eight others. President Lazarus Chakwera declared 21 days of national mourning as flags will fly at half-staff across the country to honor the victims.
A ministerial committee has been appointed to oversee preparations for Chilima’s state funeral, although no date has been set yet. The tragic crash claimed the lives of nine individuals, including former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri, wife of former President Bakili Muluzi.
The aircraft carrying Chilima and his staff crashed in bad weather, killing everyone on board. The search for the wreckage lasted over 24 hours before it was found in a forest plantation south of Mzuzu. The remains of the victims were brought back to Lilongwe where mourners, including President Chakwera and Chilima’s wife, paid their respects.
