Former African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule has been accused of being involved in a corrupt tender scheme that diverted funds meant for the removal of asbestos from the homes of the poorest residents in the Free State. The scheme allegedly benefited high-ranking government officials through kickbacks instead of effectively removing the hazardous material.
Magashule and businessman Edwin Sodi of Blackhead Consulting are being accused of orchestrating a “rent-seeking” scheme that resulted in minimal work being done for a hefty sum of money. A total of 10 individuals, including Magashule, have been charged with fraud, corruption, money laundering, and violating the Public Finance Management Act.
The Free State NPA welcomed the decision of the US district court and expressed confidence in the strength of the state’s case. The case has faced delays due to legal representation issues, with one accused being absent from court due to illness.
The upcoming court appearance on June 14 will focus on the defense’s readiness and setting a date for the pre-trial and trial proceedings.
