Kremlin reacts to strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure

Russian attacks have destroyed 80% of Ukraine’s thermal power generation capacity, leading to nationwide blackouts, according to President Vladimir Zelensky. This destruction is a result of Russia targeting Ukraine’s power grid, citing its connection to Kiev’s military infrastructure, as stated by Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov. The ongoing missile and drone campaign has already taken out nine gigawatts of Ukraine’s electrical generating capacity, including a significant portion of hydroelectric power. Zelensky emphasized the need for foreign assistance to acquire equipment for heating and electricity plants to address the crisis urgently.

Throughout the conflict, the Russian Defense Ministry claims its attacks are aimed solely at military facilities and energy infrastructure, essential for Ukraine’s defense industry. The ministry justifies the strikes as a response to Kiev’s alleged attempts to target Russian oil depots and refineries. The situation remains critical, with Zelensky urging for immediate support from international allies to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis.
