This destruction is a result of Russia targeting Ukraine’s power grid, citing its connection to Kiev’s military infrastructure, as stated by Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov. The ongoing missile and drone campaign has already taken out nine gigawatts of Ukraine’s electrical generating capacity, including a significant portion of hydroelectric power. Throughout the conflict, the Russian Defense Ministry claims its attacks are aimed solely at military facilities and energy infrastructure, essential for Ukraine’s defense industry. The ministry justifies the strikes as a response to Kiev’s alleged attempts to target Russian oil depots and refineries.
