Japan has improved its ranking in the gender gap index, moving up to 118th out of 146 countries in 2024. Despite this progress, Japan still lags behind other advanced economies and remains the lowest among the G7 nations. The World Economic Forum’s report highlighted the low representation of women in Japan’s political and economic spheres, as well as the disparity in income levels.
While countries like Iceland, Finland, and Norway lead the rankings for gender equality, Japan faces challenges in achieving parity. The report emphasized the slow global pace towards closing the gender gap, projecting it would take 134 years to achieve full equality.
Japan’s ranking in economic participation and political empowerment also fell behind, with men holding the majority of leadership positions. Despite some improvements in female representation, Japan still has work to do in closing the gender gap in various areas.
The annual gender gap report serves as a reminder of the ongoing disparities worldwide and the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality. Japan’s progress, while incremental, highlights the importance of addressing these issues for a more equal society.
