Armenia to deploy police guards for protection

Armenia is set to establish police guards as part of its ongoing police reforms. The legislative package discussing this initiative was recently debated in the National Assembly, with Arpine Sargsyan, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, presenting the bills.

The transformation of Armenia’s internal troops into police forces paved the way for the creation of police guards focused on internal security. These guards will also have roles during military operations or emergencies, albeit without direct involvement in combat situations.

The proposed legislation aims to provide clearer guidelines on the use of force by law enforcement in Armenia. The Minister of Internal Affairs will appoint the commander of the police guards, marking a departure from the usual presidential appointment process for law enforcement heads.

Police guards in Armenia will encompass various units, including the main national security department and the traffic police responsible for high-ranking officials. The Ministry of Internal Affairs anticipates the establishment of a modern, well-equipped, and highly trained police force capable of fulfilling strategic objectives and meeting international standards.
