In a shocking revelation, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have announced the arrest of a “spy network” disguised as humanitarian organizations, including 11 U.N. staff. The group has alleged that the network, allegedly linked to the CIA, has been conducting espionage activities in Yemen for years.
The arrests, which come amidst the ongoing civil war in Yemen, have jeopardized critical humanitarian operations in the country where over half of the population relies on aid. The Houthi rebels have a history of targeting civilians, including U.N. and NGO workers, since the conflict began in 2014.
Mohammed Albasha, an analyst, believes that the arrests are a pretext to eliminate non-governmental organizations in Yemen and force international entities to work exclusively with Houthi-run bodies. This move signifies a dangerous trend in the region.
The Houthis’ activities have raised concerns globally, as they have also been implicated in drone and missile strikes in the region. This recent development adds to the growing tensions in Yemen and the broader Middle East.
