The Importance of Play in Child Development

UNICEF recognizes the crucial role that play plays in a child’s development, contributing to their physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. Mr. Rahama Farah, Chief of UNICEF Kano Field Office, emphasized this at a recent event commemorating the International Day of Play (IDOP) at Kwalli Special Primary School in Kano.

Farah highlighted the significance of play in shaping children’s future, stressing the need for parents, community leaders, and governments to appreciate this aspect of childhood. He emphasized that play is not a waste of time but rather a vital tool in developing a child’s abilities and happiness.

The event received support from the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, who thanked UNICEF for their collaboration in enhancing learning in Kano schools. The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Hassana Aminu, also emphasized the importance of playful learning in engaging children and fostering their interest in education.

Children who participated in the event expressed their delight and gratitude towards the state government and UNICEF for organizing the maiden edition of IDOP. This event further underscores the commitment to providing quality education and promoting the holistic development of children in Kano State.
