President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan announced the country’s ambitious goal to become a “green country” by 2037 during the Third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028” in Dushanbe. Alongside the adoption of the “Country’s Natural Greening Program until 2040,” which aims to plant over two billion seedlings, Tajikistan is focusing on utilizing renewable energy sources and transitioning to a “green” economy. Rahmon highlighted the crucial role of water resources in achieving this goal, emphasizing that over 98 percent of Tajikistan’s electricity currently comes from hydropower and the country plans to reach 100 percent by 2032.
Tajikistan’s commitment to cross-border cooperation on water-related issues was also underscored during the conference. The event, part of a series held biennially by the Tajik government in partnership with the UN, aims to support the objectives of the International Decade of Action.
