Unions and Government representatives are set to meet at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) today to address the ongoing pay dispute involving retained firefighters. Last month, a proposal to increase the retainer for part-time firefighters was deemed inadequate by SIPTU. Despite a slightly improved offer, negotiations remain at a standstill.
SIPTU expressed disappointment in the Government’s approach and called for an urgent resolution to prevent further escalation. The union’s Retained Firefighters’ Committee is seeking a fair increase in the retainer after last year’s industrial action by over 2,000 firefighters.
The meeting at the WRC aims to find a solution that satisfies both parties and avoids a resurgence of the dispute. With tensions high and expectations clear, the outcome of this negotiation will have a significant impact on the future working conditions for retained firefighters across the country.
