Reasons for Enugu DisCo’s Offices Sealing by State Govt

The Enugu State government took a decisive action on Tuesday by sealing off the offices of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the state. This move came as a result of the EEDC’s failure to provide prepaid meters to customers as mandated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The state government accused EEDC of exploiting customers through estimated billings and unjust disconnections of government offices due to alleged debts. However, EEDC expressed disappointment over the sudden closure of its offices without prior notice, which disrupted its operations.

In response, the Enugu State government refuted EEDC’s claim of being owed N1.3 billion, stating that all bills since May 2023 were promptly settled. Furthermore, the government highlighted significant investments in electricity infrastructure and demanded a detailed audit of the alleged debts.

In conclusion, the government demanded the retraction of false claims and the immediate reconnection of all disconnected government agencies. This clash underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in the power sector to ensure fair treatment of customers and government entities alike.
