President Muizzu talks bilateral ties during first India visit: Maldives Foreign Ministry

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu visited India to strengthen bilateral cooperation, attending the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Top leaders from neighboring countries also attended the ceremony. Muizzu discussed enhancing ties with India during his visit and attended a banquet hosted by the President of India. Both leaders emphasized the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and India, focusing on areas like people-to-people linkages and economic cooperation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met with Muizzu to discuss closer collaboration between India and the Maldives. This visit marked Muizzu’s first trip to India since taking office in 2023, diverging from his predecessors who visited Delhi first. Despite strains in the relationship due to Muizzu’s pro-China stance, both countries expressed optimism for strengthening ties in the future.
