PPP left out of budget and defamation law talks – Pakistan

The PPP has publicly expressed its concerns about the lack of consultation by the Punjab government on important issues such as the budget and the recent defamation law. Despite not being part of the coalition government in the province, the PPP has supported the ruling party in the assembly. PPP Central Punjab general secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza criticized the government for not including PPP in the budget preparation process and raised issues about relief plans for the salaried class and farmers.

Murtaza also mentioned the Punjab Defamation Act 2024 and stated that PPP stands with journalists and freedom of expression. He announced that the party would challenge the law in court. The Lahore High Court has scheduled a hearing on the appeal against the act. The petitioners argue that the law violates fundamental rights and aims to control the media. They have requested the court to strike down the law for being contrary to citizens’ rights.

The PPP has no intention of joining the provincial government, and any decision regarding this will be made by the party’s Central Executive Committee. The party remains committed to addressing stakeholders’ concerns and protecting freedom of expression.
