Government Considering Incentives for Local Assembly of Solar Panels in Budget 2024-25
In the upcoming budget 2024-25, the government is contemplating providing incentives to encourage the local assembly of solar panels. Pakistan Solar Association (PSL) Senior Vice-President Mohammad Zakir Ali, part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent delegation to China, has expressed optimism about the government not imposing new taxes or duties on solar panels. He highlighted the government’s efforts to attract Chinese manufacturers to establish units in Pakistan in light of global restrictions on China.
Despite the government’s commitment to solarisation, no formal agreements have been signed during the recent visit to China. However, discussions with Chinese investors indicated the importance of imposing import duties on completely built-up (CBU) solar panels to support local manufacturers and facilitate fresh investments in the solar industry.
Federal Minister for Energy Awais Khan Leghari has reassured consumers about the continuation of the solar net-metering policy, emphasizing the government’s promotion of net-metering and stakeholder consultations before any policy changes.
Overall, the government’s focus on promoting local assembly, addressing import duties, and sustaining solar net-metering reflects its commitment to renewable energy in Pakistan.
