In response to South Korea’s recent propaganda broadcasts, North Korea is reportedly setting up loudspeakers along the border, according to South Korea’s military. The two-hour anti-Pyongyang broadcast last Sunday marked the first such event in six years, prompting North Korea to retaliate.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff have confirmed the suspected installation of North Korean speakers along the border but did not provide specifics. South Korea also reported that North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line, prompting warning shots from the South Korean military.
The escalation follows a recent balloon campaign from both nations, with North Korea suspending its trash balloon campaign in response to South Korean activists sending propaganda leaflets via balloons. South Korea’s National Security Council has decided to suspend a tension reduction pact from 2018 until trust is restored between the two Koreas, allowing for military training near the demarcation line.
