Mosul Revives: A Decade After Isis Seized Control

In the heart of Mosul’s Old City, Saqr Zakaria reflects on the transformation of his once war-torn hometown. After the liberation of the city from Islamic State militants in 2017, Zakaria returned to set up the Baytna Foundation, a cultural center dedicated to rebuilding the community.

Walking the same streets where the extremist group declared its caliphate, Zakaria is amazed at the progress and resilience of the people. Despite the devastation caused by the battle to free the city and the subsequent challenges of reconstruction, life is slowly returning to normal on both sides of the Tigris River.

The memories of killings, kidnappings, and destruction are still fresh, but the spirit of hope and renewal is evident. Zakaria’s simple act of watering flowers symbolizes the resilience and determination of the people to rebuild their lives and reclaim their city.
