Lagos State Government Reinforces Environmental Laws for Sustainability

The Lagos State government recently emphasized the importance of sustainable practices to address environmental crises affecting food security, water availability, biodiversity, and citizens’ livelihood. During the conclusion of the 2024 World Environment Day celebration in Ikeja, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, highlighted the theme of “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”

Wahab commended ministry staff for promoting policies that drive sustainable practices and reiterated the state’s commitment to enforcing regulations preventing land degradation, supporting restoration efforts, and promoting sustainable land use. He acknowledged the global impact of unsustainable practices on land degradation and emphasized the need for proactive measures to address these challenges.

Lagos State has been implementing sustainable agricultural practices, reforestation, and afforestation projects to restore degraded lands and prevent further desertification. The commissioner emphasized partnerships with international organizations, research institutions, civil societies, and the private sector to leverage resources and innovative solutions for a sustainable environment.

Wahab urged residents to embrace sustainable practices, support restoration initiatives, and advocate for policies protecting the environment to ensure lasting benefits for the economy and future generations.
