In her book On Being Included: Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life, Sara Ahmed delves into the power of “acts of naming.” A recent incident at the University of Melbourne, where students renamed a building “Mahmoud’s Hall” in honor of Mahmoud Alnaouq, sheds light on the white supremacist history embedded in Western universities.
Mahmoud, a student from Gaza pursuing a Master’s degree, was tragically killed by an Israeli missile along with his family members. Despite this, universities have remained silent, valuing academic pursuits over confronting ongoing genocide and injustice.
