Dozens of people, many wearing red, gathered outside Winnipeg’s law courts to form a round dance on the final day of the trial of a confessed serial killer. Among them were women, including the sister of one victim, drumming and singing while another victim’s daughter carried a shovel painted with the words Search The Land Fill.
Although the trial has ended, families emphasized that their fight to bring their loved ones home is far from over. The families seek justice for victims Jeremy Skibicki admitted to killing, including Morgan Harris, Rebecca Contois, Marcedes Myran, and an unidentified woman known as Buffalo Woman.
After months of struggle, the families finally secured government funding of $20 million for the landfill search. Inside the courtroom, final submissions were made to Chief Justice Glenn Joyal by lawyers, highlighting Skibicki’s mental state during the killings.
The verdict is eagerly awaited by the families, who have endured immense grief and pain throughout this long journey of seeking justice and closure.
