At least 55 killed in clan fighting in central Somalia

A tragic clash between two clans in central Somalia has resulted in the death of 55 people and the injury of 155 more, as reported by residents and medical officials. This incident highlights the ongoing struggle faced by Somalia’s federal government, not only against the Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group but also in dealing with clan-based conflicts over land and water resources in the region.

The violent confrontation between the Dir and Marihan clans, former allies in the fight against al Shabaab, erupted over grazing land and water sources in Abudwaq and Herale towns. Despite efforts to intervene, the government arrived late, leading to a tragic loss of lives.

Hospitals in the area treated numerous wounded individuals, reflecting the extent of the conflict. Some believe that al Shabaab may have played a role in instigating the clash between these once united clans.

While a ceasefire has been established, the need for a lasting peace remains paramount in this volatile region, as emphasized by local residents. The aftermath of this clash serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in Somalia.
