Russian anti-submarine ship Admiral Levchenko is burning in the Barents Sea after an engine malfunctioned and caught fire, according to Dmytro Pletenchuk, press chief for the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

Pletenchuk stated on Facebook that the ship with several hundred crew onboard was locked in a “struggle for survival,” attributed to Ukraine’s sanctions affecting the Russian Navy’s ability to service engines manufactured in Mykolaiv.

Since the launch of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted Russian naval ships in the Black Sea, including the sinking of the Rostov-on-Don submarine in Sevastopol. Recent drone attacks destroyed Russian patrol boats in Crimea.

The Ukrainian military reported that around 30% of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet had been destroyed. Russian submarines are now patrolling the Black Sea in response to the naval losses inflicted by Ukraine.
