Recent survey results revealed that 72% of respondents in the Philippines favored diplomacy and other peaceful methods over military action in addressing disputes with China. This shift in public opinion was noted by Ranjit Rye, the president of Octa Research, during a forum held by local think tank Stratbase ADR in Manila.
The survey also highlighted the high public support for a more aggressive stance against China, particularly under the Marcos administration. The escalating tensions in the South China Sea have led to 76% of respondents naming China as the greatest threat to the Philippines.
Additionally, the call for modernizing and strengthening the Philippines’ military capabilities to protect its maritime territories was echoed by 68% of respondents. This sentiment reflects a growing concern over China’s expanding presence in the region.
