Malawi is in a state of distress as a plane carrying Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others has gone missing. The short-hop airforce flight was scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport but all contact was lost, sparking a frantic search that has yielded no results so far.
Malawi’s Office of the President and Cabinet issued a statement confirming the disappearance of the aircraft and the ongoing search and rescue operations. Chilima, 51, was on board the Malawi Defense Force aircraft that departed from Lilongwe. The journey to Mzuzu was expected to be brief, but concerns grew as hours passed with no sign of the aircraft.
President Lazarus Chakwera altered his plans to travel to the Bahamas in light of the situation. In a previous incident in 2022, Chilima faced corruption charges but was eventually cleared after multiple court appearances. The details surrounding the missing plane continue to unfold, and we await any updates on this developing story.
