Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has asserted that he had no role in the delay in selecting and appointing the new Alaafin of Oyo as he does not have an anointed candidate. This statement was made by the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Olusegun Olayiwola, during a ceremony where 12 Baales were presented with Part II Recognised Chieftaincy certificates.
The vacant position of Alaafin became available after the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. The newly recognized chiefs, including Chief Olaniyi Adegboye III, Chief David Oyediran, and Chief Samuel Odurinde, are now eligible to attend the State Council of Obas and Chiefs meetings in Ibadan.
Governor Makinde emphasized that the importance of these chieftaincies is a starting point for future elevation and urged the chiefs to ensure the security and well-being of their communities. He highlighted the essential role of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and stability.
The event was attended by Oyomesi kingmakers, local government chairmen, and other dignitaries, showing support for the newly elevated chiefs and commitment to preserving cultural heritage and traditional institutions.
