Agriculture sector contributes 2.9% to Pakistan’s GDP: Tarar

Climate Change Impacts Agriculture Sector: Pakistan’s Response

Despite adverse climate change, the agriculture sector in Pakistan continues to contribute significantly, with 2.9% to GDP and 37.4% share in total livelihoods. Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar addressed the National Assembly on the effects of climate change on agriculture, emphasizing the need for action.

Senator Tarar highlighted the challenges faced by Pakistan, particularly in the Himalayan region, and the devastating impact of the 2022 floods. To address these issues, the government has introduced initiatives such as the Kisan package, climate resilient seeds, and water conservation projects.

Senator Dr. Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur raised concerns about the shrinking cultivatable land due to development activities like housing projects. She emphasized the need for stronger government action to protect farmers and ensure food security.

Senator Zeeshan Khanzada stressed the importance of raising Pakistan’s voice on global forums for climate finance and building dams to protect agricultural land. The Deputy Chairman Senate concluded the debate, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change effects on agriculture.
