Swiss Voters Expected to Approve Renewable Energy Law
Swiss voters are anticipated to approve a law in a referendum aimed at accelerating the development of renewable energy, as the country targets carbon neutrality by 2050. The legislation on “a secure electricity supply based on renewable energies” is supported by 73 percent of voters according to final opinion polls. Switzerland recently faced condemnation from an international court for insufficient action against climate change.
The law, approved by parliament, has faced opposition from smaller environmental groups fearing landscape alteration due to energy projects. The law aims to increase wind, solar, and hydro power production while easing planning conditions for renewable energy installations. The government assures a case-by-case examination of projects and restricts construction in conservation areas.
Largest party SVP supports the referendum to defend civil nuclear power. Greenpeace and WWF endorse the law to reduce electricity imports and enhance energy security. Results of the referendum are anticipated later in the day following advanced postal voting.
