As the European elections votes are being counted, the local government results are slowly unfolding, with Leitrim County Council being the first to elect all councillors. Sinn Féin candidate Róisín Kenny clinched the final seat in Ballinamore.
Initial indications suggest no major shifts in party standings, with Sinn Féin expected to see improvements from the previous elections, but still relying on transfers for success. Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin expressed satisfaction with his party’s performance, while Fine Gael’s Paschal Donohoe refuted claims of their decline in political influence.
Meanwhile, the European Parliament election count has commenced, revealing early leads for candidates like Barry Andrews and Regina Doherty in Dublin. Strong support was also noted for incumbents like Maria Walsh and Sean Kelly.
In the South West, voters had the unique opportunity to elect a mayor with executive powers, where John Moran currently holds the lead. The election results so far indicate a stable political landscape in Ireland.
