After 50 years in politics, Fine Gael councillor Mary Hilda Cavanagh has been re-elected as the country’s longest-serving female councillor. Winning 1,865 first preference votes in the Castlecomer electoral area, Cavanagh’s dedication, hard work, and availability to her constituents have been the keys to her success.
Reflecting on her career, Cllr Cavanagh expressed her gratitude for the kindness of her electorate and the fair treatment she received as a woman in politics. With a passion for agriculture and education, she has served on various committees for over 50 years.
Despite intending to retire at 40, Cavanagh’s love for her work and good health may see her continue in politics. Surrounded by family, including her six grandchildren, at the Kilkenny count, she remains positive about the future of politics, even encouraging the younger generation to pursue a career in public service.
