Ukraine made history by hitting a Russian Su-57 fighter jet for the first time, as reported by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) on June 9. The jet was damaged in an attack on the Akhtubinsk airfield in southern Russia, nearly 589 kilometers from the front line.
Satellite images confirmed the jet’s intact state on June 7, but it suffered explosive damage after the strike on June 8. The Su-57 is Russia’s most advanced fighter jet, equipped with cruise missiles regularly used to target Ukraine, even civilian areas.
Ukraine successfully downed six Russian fighter jets last month, primarily Su-25s, known for close air support. The recent strike on the Su-57 marks a significant milestone in the ongoing conflict. Additionally, on May 17, Ukrainian forces also targeted Balbek Airfield in occupied Crimea.
The U.S. government’s delay in providing military aid to Ukraine, like tanks and F-16 jets, has raised questions about the dynamics of international support in the region.
