Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka, a well-known Catholic priest, has raised concerns about the minimum wage issue in Nigeria, urging the government to handle it carefully to avoid potential crises. As the government and labour unions debate the new minimum wage, with the government proposing N62,000 and the unions demanding N250,000, Mbaka criticized the high allowances received by legislators in comparison to the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.
He suggested that lawmakers should also be subject to the proposed N62,000 national minimum wage. Mbaka emphasized the need for the government to consider the plight of teachers, nurses, and civil servants who work tirelessly for low wages.
Addressing the media, Mbaka questioned the fairness of the current distribution of allowances and emphasized the importance of handling the minimum wage issue cautiously to prevent further social and economic disruptions. He called for a more equitable approach to compensation in light of the country’s inflation rates and the struggles faced by many citizens.
