Syria’s Healthcare Crisis: A Call for Creative Solutions
The healthcare system in Syria is on the brink of collapse, with almost half of the health workforce fleeing the country. Hanan Balkhy, the regional director of the World Health Organization, recently visited Syria and described the situation as “catastrophic” with severe shortages of medicines and equipment.
Doctors in Syria are facing low wages, lack of resources, and are unable to access proper medication or equipment, leading to a dire situation. Balkhy emphasized the need for new, innovative solutions to attract and retain young doctors in the country. She proposed engaging physicians in research projects, supporting local manufacturing of essential medications, and providing access to virtual platforms for international collaboration.
Children are bearing the brunt of the crisis, with high rates of malnutrition and burn injuries due to the lack of resources and intermittent electricity. Balkhy called on donor countries to provide humanitarian funding for Syria and emphasized the importance of prevention in addressing the root causes of the harm.
It is crucial to rethink traditional healthcare practices and find creative ways to support the struggling healthcare system in Syria, ensuring that medical professionals can continue to provide essential care to those in need.
