Kenya and Tanzania Strike Power-Sharing Deal for Climate Negotiations

cop28

Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to co-chair the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) for the next two years. This unique power-sharing agreement will see each country taking the lead for a year, starting with Kenya in 2024-2025 during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The deal was signed at the UNFCCC meetings in Bonn, Germany, solidifying their roles in international climate negotiations.

The AGN is a key technical body for African countries during climate talks, helping draft positions and texts for adoption by African ministers at COPs. Kenya’s win in the hotly contested election last year was disputed by Tanzania, but a compromise led to the new power-sharing arrangement.

As Kenya prepares to lead AGN, Tanzania is gearing up to take over in 2025-2026, ensuring continuity and collaboration in Africa’s climate leadership. With potential economic benefits and a focus on clean energy, this partnership sets a positive tone for the region’s climate initiatives.
