UN Secretary-General António Guterres has taken a significant step by including the Israeli military on a global list of perpetrators of crimes against children. The announcement was made by Guterres’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, who revealed that Israel, along with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, made it onto the list in the secretary-general’s annual report on children in armed conflict.
In a diplomatic move, Dujarric also mentioned that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were informed about their inclusion on the list prior to its submission to the UN Security Council next Friday. Furthermore, Guterres’ chief of staff personally reached out to the Israeli U.N. mission to provide a heads up. This step was taken to ensure transparency and prevent any premature leaks.
This development highlights the UN’s commitment to holding all parties accountable for their actions in armed conflicts, especially when it involves the well-being and protection of children. It serves as a reminder that violations against children will not go unnoticed or unpunished.
