Investigation launched into exclusion of Jewish student group from NJ high school yearbook

A New Jersey school district has hired an outside law firm to investigate the controversial erasure of a Jewish student group from a high school yearbook. The members’ names were omitted from the page, replaced by a picture of a group of Muslim students. East Brunswick Public Schools announced the independent review by Brisman Law to determine accountability and intent – malicious or accidental.

Superintendent Victor Valeski expressed confidence in the investigation, emphasizing the firm’s autonomy. He apologized to Jewish students for the incident and separately to Muslim students. East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen condemned the act as anti-Semitic, calling for potential prosecution if deemed a hate crime.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations urged a fair investigation, highlighting the backlash faced by unknowing Muslim students. A new photo of the Jewish Student Union will be included in corrected yearbooks. Valeski emphasized the need for proper oversight and hinted at potential disciplinary action.
