Alaa Zaqout: A Story of Survival in Gaza
Alaa Zaqout, a resilient young woman in Gaza, bravely shares her harrowing experiences of living through genocide in the war-torn region. Like many Gazans, Alaa and her family have faced multiple displacements due to the ongoing conflict, which destroyed their home in north Gaza just last October. Now residing in a cramped room in Deir Al-Balah with her parents and siblings, Alaa reflects on her life before the war, when she ran an arts and crafts shop and spent blissful days painting by the sea.
‘I pray that I die in one piece’
As the sounds of war grow closer, fear grips Alaa’s heart, leaving her in a constant state of anxiety. Sleepless nights filled with explosions have forced her to confront the grim realities of death and destruction. Despite the hardships, Alaa clings to hope, finding solace in art, even amid the grey desolation that now defines Gaza.
