In order to rebuild Hong Kong’s global reputation, it is essential to involve “honest brokers” rather than relying on government officials. Over the past 30 years, Hong Kong has faced a narrative war, with many misconceptions about its future post-handover in 1997. Despite efforts by groups like the Vision 2047 Foundation and the Better Hong Kong Foundation to provide unbiased discussions, some prejudices persisted.
The key challenge is to identify and prioritize voices and channels that can facilitate open and constructive dialogue. One effective strategy is to leverage Hong Kong’s presence in international organizations like the WTO and Apec, advocating for principles aligned with the city’s values.
Focusing on thought leadership in global economic cooperation and investing in policy research can enhance Hong Kong’s influence on critical trade issues and demonstrate its intellectual capacity. By supporting research initiatives and fostering a community of “honest brokers,” Hong Kong can position itself as a vital trade and investment hub in Asia.
This strategic approach, led by non-governmental figures recognized for their credibility, can lay the groundwork for restoring Hong Kong’s international standing.
